# Credit score for new migrants: building an Australian credit file from zero

**In short:** Your credit history from Nepal or anywhere else does not follow you to Australia. New migrants start with a thin or empty credit file, which lenders treat cautiously rather than badly. You build a file by holding a few credit products in your own name and paying them on time every month. Under comprehensive credit reporting, up to 24 months of repayment history is visible to lenders.

An empty credit file is not a bad credit file, but it gives a lender nothing to go on. Combined with a short employment history and a recent PR grant, it can be the difference between a quick approval and a request for more evidence. The good news is that a credit file takes months, not years, to build if you are deliberate about it.

## Key takeaways

- Australia has three main credit reporting bodies, and lenders may check any of them. You can get a free copy of your report from each, and it pays to check all three before applying.
- Comprehensive credit reporting means lenders see not just defaults but your month-by-month repayment history on credit accounts, generally for up to 24 months.
- A post-paid mobile plan, an energy account and a small credit card paid in full each month are enough to build a positive file.
- Every credit application, including buy now pay later, leaves an enquiry. Too many in a short period lowers your score and worries assessors.
- Credit limits count against borrowing power even if you never use them. Reduce or close cards before applying.

## How Australian credit reporting works

Each credit reporting body holds a file on you once you first apply for credit. Under comprehensive credit reporting, lenders and telcos share both negative events (defaults, missed payments, court judgments) and positive data (accounts open, limits, and whether you paid on time each month). Lenders read the positive history as evidence of character.

Your score is a number generated by each bureau from that file. There is no single official score, and lenders rely on the underlying data and their own scorecards as much as the headline number. [Moneysmart](https://moneysmart.gov.au/) explains how to request your free report and how to dispute an error.

Nothing from overseas appears. Your bank in Kathmandu, your credit card in Dubai or your student loan in India is invisible to Australian bureaus, although lenders will still ask you to declare overseas liabilities.

## Building a file from zero: what works

| Step | What it does | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Post-paid mobile plan in your name | Creates a file with a telco account paid monthly | Month 1 |
| Electricity or gas account in your name | Adds another regular, reported account | Month 1 |
| Small credit card ($1,000 to $2,000 limit), paid in full monthly | The most powerful positive signal, shows 12 to 24 months of on-time payments | Months 2 to 24 |
| Car loan through a mainstream lender, if you need a car anyway | Shows managing a larger repayment | Optional |
| Check your report from each bureau, fix errors | Removes surprises | Every 6 months |

Two or three accounts paid on time is enough. More accounts do not help and add limits that reduce borrowing power. If you need a vehicle, a [car loan](/services/car-loans/) from a reputable lender builds history, but only borrow what you would have borrowed anyway.

## What hurts a new file

- Missed or late payments on anything reported, including phone bills. One late payment stays visible for up to two years.
- Defaults, which stay on your file for five years and are a hard stop for most home loan lenders.
- Multiple credit enquiries in a short period. Applying for four credit cards in a month reads as financial stress.
- Payday loans and small-amount credit contracts. Many lenders decline home loan applicants with recent payday loans regardless of score.
- Buy now pay later. BNPL products became regulated as credit in Australia, and lenders increasingly ask about them and see them on statements. A dozen small instalments across Afterpay and Zip look like dependence on credit.
- Being a guarantor or joint account holder on someone else's debt.

If you have a mark on your file, read [credit score and home loans](/guides/credit-score-and-home-loans/) for how lenders weigh it and which lenders are more flexible.

## Credit limits and borrowing power

Lenders assess a credit card at a percentage of the limit, not the balance. A card with a $10,000 limit and a zero balance is still treated as a monthly commitment of roughly $300 by many lenders. Over a 30-year loan at the assessment rate (your rate plus a 3 percentage point buffer), that commitment can reduce borrowing capacity by tens of thousands of dollars. Our post on [how credit card limits cut your borrowing power](/blog/how-credit-card-limits-cut-your-borrowing-power/) shows the arithmetic. Run your own figures through the [borrowing power calculator](/calculators/borrowing-power/).

## Worked example: Suman's first 18 months

Suman arrived from Nepal on a 482 visa, was granted PR 18 months later and wants to buy a $580,000 unit in [Lalor](/mortgage-broker/lalor/). Here is the credit-building path that made the application clean.

| Month | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Post-paid phone plan and electricity account in his name | File created |
| 3 | $1,500 credit card, used for fuel, paid in full each month by direct debit | 15 months of positive history by application |
| 6 | Checked his report, found a mobile provider had listed a wrong address, corrected it | Clean file |
| 12 | Declined a BNPL sign-up at a retailer; paid cash | No extra enquiries or liabilities |
| 17 | Reduced credit card limit to $1,000 before applying | Smaller assessed commitment |
| 18 | Applied through GNT Finance | Approved |

On a $75,000 salary, the difference between a $1,000 card and a $10,000 card is, for illustration, roughly $20,000 to $30,000 in borrowing capacity with most lenders. Suman kept the small card and used it well, which is exactly what an assessor wants to see.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take a new migrant to build a usable credit file?

Six months of on-time payments on two accounts is usually enough for a mainstream lender to see a pattern, and 12 months is comfortable. Some lenders will approve a home loan with a thin file if income, savings and rental history are strong. Having no file is not a decline; having a bad file is far harder to fix than starting clean.

### Should I get a credit card just to build credit?

A small card paid in full every month is the most efficient way to build positive history, and it costs nothing if you never carry a balance. Keep the limit low, set up a direct debit for the full closing balance, and reduce or close the card before you apply for a home loan if the limit is high.

### Does buy now pay later affect a home loan?

Yes. Lenders see BNPL instalments on your bank statements and many now treat active BNPL accounts as liabilities. Heavy use suggests reliance on credit for everyday spending. Close BNPL accounts and let the last instalment clear at least a few months before applying. The [ASIC](https://asic.gov.au/) website has information on how BNPL is regulated.

### Can I get a home loan with no credit history at all?

Some lenders will consider it, particularly for permanent residents with stable employment and genuine savings. They will lean harder on your rental ledger, employment letter and savings pattern. A broker who knows which lenders accept thin files avoids wasted applications, each of which would add an enquiry to your file.
