# Skills assessment for Nepali qualifications: VETASSESS, ACS, ANMAC, Engineers Australia and TRA

**In short:** A positive skills assessment is the first gate for the 189, 190, 491 and most employer-sponsored visas. The assessing body depends on your occupation: ANMAC for nurses, ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineers, TRA for trades such as chefs and mechanics, and VETASSESS for most other professions. Nepali graduates need certified transcripts, degree certificates and detailed employment references, and should expect the process to take months rather than weeks.

The skills assessment is where many Nepali applications stall, not because the qualification is weak but because a Tribhuvan University transcript arrives late, an employer reference in Kathmandu lacks the right detail, or a translation is not certified. We are mortgage brokers, so we cannot assess your skills, but we see the financial consequences of delays every month. This post explains the bodies, the documents and the timing, and how to keep your home-loan file healthy while you wait. Confirm every requirement with the assessing body and a MARA-registered agent.

## Key takeaways

- Each occupation has one assessing body; applying to the wrong one wastes months and fees.
- Nepali university documents must be complete, consistent and, where in Nepali, translated by a certified translator.
- Employment references need dates, hours, duties and a signatory on letterhead; a one-line experience letter is not enough.
- Timelines vary from weeks to several months; plan the visa, the job and the savings around that.
- Assessment months are savings months: a lender will later want to see the same steady account history that a state government wants to see in your tax returns.

## Which body assesses which occupation

| Assessing body | Typical occupations for Nepali applicants | What they look at |
|---|---|---|
| ANMAC (nurses and midwives) | Registered nurse, midwife, enrolled nurse | Qualification, English, and AHPRA registration alongside |
| ACS (Australian Computer Society) | Software engineer, developer programmer, ICT business analyst, network engineer | ICT content of the degree and relevant work experience |
| Engineers Australia | Civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and structural engineers | Accredited degree or a competency demonstration report |
| TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) | Chef, cook, motor mechanic, carpenter, electrician | Trade qualification plus practical experience; some pathways need a technical interview |
| VETASSESS | Accountant-adjacent roles, management, marketing, HR, teaching and many others | Comparability of the degree and depth of skilled employment |
| CPA Australia, CA ANZ or IPA | Accountants, auditors, finance managers | Degree coverage of core accounting areas |

Each body publishes its own document list and fee. Home Affairs lists the body for every occupation on the skilled occupation list on its [website](https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/).

## Documents from Nepali institutions

Graduates of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University face the same practical hurdles.

### Academic documents

- Degree certificate and provisional certificate. Many Nepali graduates hold only the provisional; get the final certificate issued.
- Full academic transcript showing every semester, issued by the university's examination controller, not just a mark sheet.
- Character certificate and migration certificate where the university issues them.
- Secondary documents (SEE, +2 or A-levels) for some bodies.
- Course syllabus or subject descriptions where the assessor checks content, which ACS and Engineers Australia commonly do.
- Certified translations of anything in Nepali, done by a NAATI-credentialed translator in Australia or an accepted translator abroad.

### Employment documents

- Reference letters on company letterhead stating position, start and end dates, hours per week, a detailed list of duties and the signatory's name and role.
- Payslips, bank statements showing salary credits, tax documents or Social Security Fund records from Nepal where available.
- For self-employment, business registration, tax filings and client contracts.
- For Australian employment, payslips, PAYG summaries and a contract.

Keep certified copies of everything. The same employment evidence will be requested again by state nomination programs and by lenders when you apply for a loan, so build one well-organised folder now. Our [home loan documents checklist](/guides/home-loan-documents-checklist/) shows the overlap.

## Timelines

Processing time depends on the body, the pathway and whether the file is complete. As a broad guide at the time of writing, expect anything from a few weeks for a straightforward degree assessment to several months where a technical interview, a competency report or a document verification with a Nepali university is involved. Add the time it takes to obtain documents from Nepal, which can be the slowest part. Then add the visa processing time after the assessment. The whole chain often runs a year or more.

### Worked example: an IT graduate's year of waiting

Prakash, a software developer in [Blacktown](/mortgage-broker/blacktown/) on a 485, applies to ACS. Gathering a syllabus and a proper reference from his Kathmandu employer takes three months; the assessment takes another two; the state nomination and visa processing follow. Instead of pausing his finances, he treats the year as a deposit year.

| | Amount |
|---|---|
| Net monthly income | $5,600 |
| Rent (shared) and living costs | $3,400 |
| Automatic monthly savings | $2,200 |
| Savings over 12 months | $26,400 |
| Assessment, translation, English test and visa costs set aside | $5,000 |
| Deposit progress at the end of the year | $21,400 |

By grant, two years of this pace gives him around $43,000. Under the [First Home Guarantee](https://www.housingaustralia.gov.au/) in Sydney, that is a 5% deposit on a home up to about $850,000, with no LMI. The NSW first-home-buyer duty exemption up to $800,000 ([Revenue NSW](https://www.revenue.nsw.gov.au/)) means a $780,000 townhouse in Blacktown carries no transfer duty at the time of writing. For illustration, the $741,000 loan at 6.00% p.a. over 30 years is about $4,443 a month. The [deposit savings calculator](/calculators/deposit-savings/) will track your own version.

## What lenders will want later

A skills assessment does not appear on a loan application, but the habits behind a good one do. When Gorakh Timilsina assessed applications as a senior credit officer, the files that passed cleanly had:

- Continuous employment with a clear job title matching the payslips.
- Savings that grew steadily rather than arriving in one lump.
- A lawful, documented deposit. Nepal Rastra Bank does not permit capital transfers out of Nepal to buy property abroad, so do not plan to fund the deposit from home; use Australian savings, NRN-compliant funds or documented gifts from family in Australia.
- No unexplained large withdrawals in the three months before applying, and a [credit file](/guides/credit-score-and-home-loans/) with no missed payments.

Read [home loans for new migrants](/guides/home-loans-for-new-migrants/) for the lender's view of a newly arrived professional, and use the [borrowing power calculator](/calculators/borrowing-power/) to see what your salary supports. If you are still on a temporary visa, our [home loans for visa holders](/services/home-loans-for-visa-holders/) page explains the narrower panel.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a Tribhuvan University degree recognised for Australian skills assessment?

Generally yes, where the degree is comparable to the Australian qualification for your occupation, which is what each body assesses. Problems usually come from incomplete transcripts, missing final certificates or syllabus gaps rather than from the university itself. Order the full transcript and final certificate early and have any Nepali-language documents certified and translated.

### Do I need Australian work experience for a skills assessment?

Not for most bodies, though experience affects both the assessment outcome and your points. Nepali experience counts if it is well evidenced. Detailed reference letters on letterhead with duties and hours are the single most common gap in files from Nepal, so ask former employers for them before you leave or arrange them through family.

### How long is a skills assessment valid?

Validity varies by body and is typically a few years, and Home Affairs sets how recent it must be when you apply for a visa. Check both the assessing body's letter and the current Home Affairs rule with a MARA-registered agent so you do not pay for an assessment that expires before your invitation.

### Does a positive skills assessment help me get a home loan?

Not directly. Lenders assess visa status, income and deposit. It helps indirectly: a positive assessment moves you toward PR, and PR gives access to the First Home Guarantee, removes the need for FIRB approval and ends the foreign purchaser surcharge. It also shows some lenders that PR is likely, which matters if you apply while still on a temporary visa.
